Without warning, the first firework launched into the darkness.

A single burst of brilliant gold exploded high above the Mediterranean, followed by a deep echo that rolled across the bay. For a brief second, thousands of people stood perfectly still before applause erupted from every direction.

Then the sky came alive.

Wave after wave of breathtaking fireworks filled the night with impossible colors. Brilliant chrysanthemums of gold cascaded toward the sea. Sapphire blue stars shimmered above the harbor. Crimson bursts exploded into silver waterfalls that seemed to float forever before disappearing into the darkness. Every reflection danced across the calm Mediterranean, making it feel as though the sky and the sea had become one spectacular canvas.

The music echoed across the waterfront as each sequence became more dramatic than the last. Every grand finale seemed impossible to surpass—until another one began only moments later. Around us, strangers smiled at one another, children pointed excitedly toward the sky, and couples instinctively moved a little closer together.

As another wave of fireworks lit up the Mediterranean, I found myself watching Seo Yeon instead of the sky. Every brilliant burst reflected in her eyes as she smiled with the same quiet excitement I’d seen whenever Cannes came up in conversation over the years. Around us, applause rolled down the shoreline after each spectacular finale. Boats anchored across the bay answered with their horns, and people who had arrived as strangers smiled, cheered, and celebrated together beneath the Riviera sky. The fireworks were breathtaking, but seeing Seo Yeon finally experience an evening she had imagined for so long became the memory I carried home. Long after the final burst faded into the warm summer night, very few people hurried to leave. Our last morning in Cannes arrived much sooner than either of us wanted. Instead of rushing to pack, we walked to a small café overlooking the Mediterranean and ordered coffee with warm croissants, taking in the familiar view one last time.

The beach had returned to its peaceful rhythm, joggers moved along La Croisette, and the same waterfront that had been filled with thousands of people during the fireworks now felt calm and almost intimate.

As we slowly made our way back toward the hotel, we found ourselves talking less about the fireworks and more about everything in between—the leisurely lunches, long walks along the coast, afternoons by the sea, and the simple joy of having nowhere else we needed to be. Our Dream Trip to Cannes had become much more than a single unforgettable evening.
